I have this book too. :)
And while I love how the illustrations are so haunting in their childish simplicity, I found the storyline a bit, er, soap opera-ish. Also, I thought the story to be more in the style of magical realism than surrealism.

I enjoyed your review of The Graveyard Book. It actually reminded me of Harry Potter in a lot of ways - like Bod being an orphan and being destined to grow up and do something magical and great. (I forgot exactly what. My memory is so bad!) And although I imagined Silas would look like Snape, I thought his personality more Dumbledore-like since he never lost his temper, often said stoic things, and was so wise and kind. Not to mention impossibly old.

I really hope you read Coraline, if you haven't yet. If you like The Graveyard Book, you'll enjoy Coraline as well. And I hope you make a review, I enjoy your opinions!

Yeah, I didn't like the story that much too. You maybe right on the magic realism, it got more and more bizarre towards the end. My four stars go mostly towards the art and how good it looks on my shelf :D

I've read Coraline, and it was okay. I gave up my copy on BookMooch. I read a similar story (Are You Afraid of the Dark: The Haunted Mirror or something like that) when I was a kid that I liked better... But am looking forward to the movie :D

Oh yeah. I vaguely remember you saying you gave up your copy of Coraline. Ehe, must've forgotten. I look forward to seeing the movie too. : )

it's pretty crazy, haha, I am perpetually out of shelves -- my To Be Read books occupy a separate shelf, plus several tottering stacks :D
